Program Manager

Position Profile

The Girls on the Run Program Manager (PM) must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades. The Girls on the Run program provides a safe and interactive way to learn about healthy living which includes an introduction and education on important topics such as goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect, while training for a 5K event.  The innovative curriculum teaches girls to listen and open up while also encouraging them to commit to a healthy lifestyle, and harness the inner strength that they possess. Our important mission is accomplished by giving girls the tools to make positive choices for a healthy body and mind, while reducing the many risks they face today.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Outreach and Site Management

  • Implement the Girls on the Run strategic program plan and achieve program goals with respect to number of girls, number of sites and demographic requirements for each site/team under your responsibility.
  • Responsible for GOTR and GOT teams including coach recruitment from the community, coach retention, site recruitment and other needs specific to each team.
  • Work with community leaders, schools and other groups to maximize Girls on the Run success.
  • Market and promote GOTR program to potential new sites including sponsored sites in low income areas and self-supporting sites as determined by the program team.
  • Work with the Operations Manager to facilitate new site application, vetting and onboarding process.
  • Coordinate all new and existing sites, including registration, recruitment and program delivery.
  • Enforce all current site policies and procedures and generate innovation and improvement as needed.
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise at sites and with volunteer coaches.

Coach Management and Training:

  • Recruit, interview and onboard qualified volunteer coaches.
  • Manage all aspects of coach training each season including training facility, training topics and breakout sessions during training, policies and procedures, CPR and background checks.
  • Recruit, train and manage all coach committee consultants during the season.
  • Ensure all program sites are staffed with qualified volunteer coaches.
  • Communicate frequently with coaches, answering questions and providing resources.
  • Ensure all coach applications are up to date each season.
  • Enforce all current coaching policies and procedures and generate continuous improvement.
  • Send out weekly communication to volunteer coaches.

Program Management:

  • Work closely with other program staff to develop coach retention/promotion plan as outlined in strategic goals.
  • Manage inventory for coach boxes including supplies and curriculum.
  • Manage the packing process to prepare for each season including coach boxes, program materials and paperwork.
  • Assist with the 5k preparation including packets for teams and coach information.
  • Provide reports as needed for staff and board.

Peripheral Duties

Performs all other duties as determined by the Executive Director


The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging in both strategic activities as well as taking a hands-on role with regards to program execution and administrative issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Four year degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experience with program management.
  • Passion for Girls on the Run’s mission and the ability to comprehend and effectively communicate issues surrounding empowerment, self-esteem, body image and whole-person health.
  • Outstanding communication and organization skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software and database management.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and make efficient decisions.
  • Flexible and adaptable. Must be able to work nights and weekends as determined by the needs of the program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Experience with Girls on the Run (or other similar youth or wellness programs)
  • Non-profit experience
  • Connections to the local community

Position Specifics

  • Full time salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
  • All positions with Girls on the Run are pending a valid background check.
