CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 15, 2013) — Girls on the Run founder, Molly Barker, received the Daily Point of Light Award at a ceremony hosted today at the White House. President Obama and the First Lady welcomed President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush to honor Ms. Barker as the winner of the 4,999th Daily Point of Light Award. For 20 years, the award has celebrated the power of the individual to spark change and improve the world.

Charity Running

07/12/2013

Runner’s World highlighted the exceptional growth of charity running in “Charity Running More Competitive Than Ever.” The articles notes the benefits for all parties: “Charities develop a revenue stream and increase their public visibility. Their training programs and cheering sections provide support for runners, many of whom would never have attempted a marathon (or half-marathon) without the pull of doing something for the greater good. And the charity partnerships strengthen the race’s relationship with the community.”

As the variety of events and the number of runners increase, though, non-profits feel the pressure to keep up with the competition. The article highlights Girls on the Run as we nationally work to increase our fundraising efforts. Marketing and Communications Director Amy Ellrod is quoted “We’re encouraging our coaches and parents to run their own event for GOTR.” This effort was helped when Esprit de She asked Girls on the Run to be its sole charity partner.

Boston Marathon Tragedy

04/18/2013

Girls on the Run International staff, board members and councils share in the sadness of Monday’s events and our hearts and prayers go out to all of the people affected by this tragedy. As we all wait to receive full details of what happened in Boston, the safety of our girls, volunteers, families and communities is our top priority.  Our Girls on the Run communities come together at Girls on the Run 5k events annually to recognize the incredible accomplishment of our girls and celebrate the love of running felt by so many of us.  Over the upcoming months, our councils plan to host 128 Girls on the Run 5k events around the nation. We are encouraging all councils to work with local law enforcement and local governmental agencies to ensure the safety and security of the events.

During times of tragedy, our girls may have questions and concerns about their own safety. To assist with these conversations, please visit the National Association of School Psychologists website for information about talking to children about violence.

Girls on the Run International thanks all of our community members for supporting our program and our girls.

Esprit de She Announces Girls on the Run as 2013 National Charity Partner

03/12/2013

Driven by a collective goal to inspire young girls to live joyful, confident and healthy lives, Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company today announced Girls on the Run International as the official national charity partner of its premiere athletic event series designed exclusively for women, Athleta Esprit de She – The Spirit of Her Race Series.

Esprit de She participants are encouraged to donate to Girls on the Run during registration for any of the 18 Athleta Esprit de She events, or they can opt to fundraise for the organization on a national or local level through participation.

“We are ecstatic that Athleta Esprit de She has invited Girls on the Run to be its official charity partner for the debut season,” says Elizabeth Kunz, President of Girls on the Run International. “Crossing the finish line is a defining moment for both girls and women — no matter their age — and is worthy of celebration. The shared desire to celebrate fitness and health, optimism and strength will inspire the women of today and nurture the girls of tomorrow.”

Designed exclusively for women, the Athleta Esprit de She Race Series features 18 fitness-inspired ‘happy hour’ 5k and 10k runs, cycle tours, duathlons and triathlons for every pace and passion. The series kicks off on May 5 in Tempe, Arizona, with a triathlon, and duathlon with subsequent races in key markets like San Francisco, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver and Houston to follow.

“In light of our focus on celebrating accomplishment and recognizing that life extends beyond the finish line, we felt a special connection with Girls on the Run,” said Athleta Esprit de She Brand Director, Lindsey Kurhajetz. “Girls today are faced with increasing challenges and obstacles that can affect their emotional and physical well-being. As women, it’s woven into our DNA to nurture and support each other. Athleta Esprit de She offers the supportive platform to flourish in the company of everyday women – those heroes we count on to empower and instill the necessary confidence we all need to pursue our dreams. Supporting young women via Girls on the Run is a natural extension of our platform.”

In February, Life Time announced Athleta as the title sponsor of Esprit de She. Athleta is also the exclusive national athletic apparel sponsor of Girls on the Run. The synergy between these three brands’ focus on empowering and supporting girls and women will amplify funding and awareness to make a desirable impact on girls across America. Athleta Esprit de She is also sponsored by LUNA bar, among others, who are on the long list of community partners that support Girls on the Run.

To RSVP for any of the Athleta Esprit de She events, visit espritdeshe.com, the official website of The Spirit of Her Race Series. Athleta Esprit de She can be found on Twitter by following @EspritdeShe and by liking the Esprit de She Facebook page.

02/18/2013

On January 16th, 2013, Girls on the Run International announced its 2013 Legacy Award, 2012 Coach of the Year and 2012 Wondergirl Award recipients at the annual Girls on the Run Summit held in New Orleans, LA.

The Legacy Award is an annual award that pays tribute to an individual who has played a considerable role in the organization’s success. It honors someone of extraordinary significance and is the greatest mark of distinction that our organization bestows.

Girls on the Run International recognized Dori Luke as the 2013 Legacy Award recipient for her instrumental contributions to creating and shaping the Girls on the Run programs.

After launching the Girls on the Run in 1996, Molly Barker met Dori Luke at an afterschool fair in Charlotte, NC, where she was promoting the program. Dori was captivated and wanted to do whatever she could to support the program. Together they coached Girls on the Run programs in Charlotte and launched new sites. They also wrote the second Girls on the Run curriculum and in 2000, Dori wrote the Girls on Track curriculum. During her tenure, the organization grew from 1 site serving 13 girls to 82 councils serving 7,300 girls. Dori worked at Girls on the Run until 2002 when she decided to complete her degree and prepare for a career in counseling. She brings the same tender and loving spirit to her clients today as she brought in those early years to Girls on the Run.

The Coach of the Year Award is an annual award that honors Girls on the Run coaches. Coaches are nominated by girls who express why they think their coach should win through writing, coloring, drawing, painting, or bedazzling the nomination form. One runner receives $250 and a second runner up’s council receives $250. The grand prize winner receives a Horizon Fitness treadmill or elliptical and a trip to the annual Girls on the Run Summit. Their council receives $500 and the nominating participant receives $100. Kim Lybarger from Girl son the Run of Greater Houston and Melissa Landorf from Girls on the Run of Eau Claire County were recognized as the two runners-up. The 2012 Coach of the Year winner is Julie McAllister of Girls on the Run of Central Illinois.

The Wondergirl Award is an annual award that honors and recognizes Girls on the Run alumnae who are embracing joy, health and confidence in their lives. The contest invites former Girls on the Run participants to share how their GOTR experience influenced the choices they made in high school, college or beyond.  Interested alumnae enter by sharing their story about how Girls on the Run has empowered them to activate their limitless potential and boldly pursue their dreams.  Girls on the Run alumnae Amanda Kappele from Girls on the Run – Heart of Missouri, Beth Gordon from Girls on the Run Magee Women's Hospital and Callie Jane Vickers from Girls on the Run Nebraska we recognized as the 2013 Wondergirl Award recipients.
