Five Remarkable Women Who Are Defining Beauty on Their Own Terms

How do you define beauty? Each Girls on the Run season, girls are asked to share what they think beauty means. After talking through their initial responses about outer beauty (“My babysitter is beautiful because she looks like Cinderalla!”), girls are asked to think about what characteristics make up inner beauty. Oftentimes, girls know what inner beauty means and their responses include someone who treats others with kindness, is brave, or isn’t afraid to be themselves. Now, more than ever, girls have opportunities to see women who stand up to beauty norms and celebrate what makes them different.

Nancy Heydinger is the executive director of Girls on the Run Vermont. This year, Hyland’s Leg Cramps offered Girls on the Run International three bibs for the 2017 Boston Marathon. Beth Gillespie is the founder and former council director for Girls on the Run East Central Illinois. This year, Hyland’s Leg Cramps offered Girls on the Run International three bibs for the 2017 Boston Marathon. Beth, who has been involved with Girls on the Run for nine years, submitted her story of what running the Boston Marathon would mean to her and was selected to receive a bib and represent Girls on the Run at this year’s marathon. Beth is currently using her training to inspire other middle-of-the-pack runners to boldly pursue their dreams and is a part of the Hyland's all-women team.

Meet the Girls on the Run SoleMate Who Raised Over $100,000

During each Girls on the Run practice, girls are asked to set a lap goal of how many laps they’ll complete that day, slowly but steadily increasing their goal at each practice. With each Ironman event that Girls on the Run Cincinnati SoleMate Jessica Leonard has completed, she has also set goals for herself – first challenging herself to raise $10,000, growing it to $20,000 and eventually totaling $100,000. To date, Jessica has completed four Ironmans and raised an astonishing $104,000!
