In one of the earlier Girls on the Run lessons, we teach girls that they are like stars in the sky. Each one may look the same but, in actuality, each star is unlike the others around it. We tell them to focus on one star and make it theirs. Then, we tell them to visualize that star shining bright inside them. We guide them to associate that beautiful, bright and powerful light with their own uniqueness. We discuss with the girls that no one can take away their brightness or the individual things they bring to the world when they activate their Star Power.
The girls learn that with this star comes power. They also learn how to access their Star Power when they feel gloomy, like their star is being covered by a cloud.
We feel like this as adults too, right?

My story begins with my friends that coached for Girls on the Run. For several years, they mentioned that I should coach as well. All I knew about it was the name – and the name intimidated me, because I am basically the opposite of a runner. Don’t get me wrong, I am athletic, but running for the sake of running has never interested me. How could I coach girls to do something I had no interest in? Little did I know, this program is about SO much more than running a 5K.

Hip! Hip! Hooray!
Pretty soon you and your girls will make your way to the end-of-season 5K event! This is the time where teams come together and celebrate the accomplishment of girls setting a goal to and preparing to cross the finish line. This moment, celebrated with friends, family, teachers/school administrators and other members of the community, will be the beginning of many more victories GOTR girls will experience in their lives!
You encouraged your girls well and kept them motivated along the way. You helped your girls find their confidence in moments of uncertainty; you ran a lap or two with them to troubleshoot or ponder the complexities of girl-life and you inspired them to go many an extra mile. You observed your girls helping each other, finding their Star Power and embracing the concept of extending the Girl Wheel.
Your girls have made incredible strides toward their seasonal feat – but it doesn’t stop here!

The culminating 5K at the end of each Girls on the Run season is my absolute favorite day! First as a parent, then as coach, and now as a program coordinator, the day doesn’t pass without goosebumps of awe and inspiration. When all 25 teams, 300 girls and their families come together for this event, the venue just oozes with girl power!

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I have a dream.”
My dream is to close the gender gap around the globe. I dream of a world where women have an equal opportunity for education, jobs, health and political positions. I dream of a world where men and women receive equal pay for equal work.
And, just as Dr. King said, “The time has come."
