Girls Set Goal of Making Recess Fun and Accessible for All Students

By Kenzie Kramer on 03/22/2016 | Giving Back

A key part of Girls on the Run is the Community Impact Project that each team participates in. Halfway through the season, the girls come up with ideas for who they would like to help in their community and how they can make a meaningful contribution. The girls work together to create a plan to benefit their community and use their time and talents to positively impact those around them. Last season, Girls on the Run teams participated in 4,387 projects across the country!

When the Girls on the Run team at Littlebrook Elementary School in Princeton, New Jersey, was prompted for their Community Impact Project ideas, some of the girls were inspired by a field trip that they had taken to Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum in Ewing, New Jersey. During the trip, the girls learned about playgrounds that were adapted for children with handicaps. When coach Gabriella Milley asked how they’d like to contribute to their community, the girls responded that they intended to purchase a swing for wheelchair-bound students to enjoy during recess.

The girls received approval from their school and have been working hard toward their goal ever since. Through bake sales, chores, an online fundraiser and even asking a local farmer to donate proceeds from pony rides, the girls have continued to raise funds and awareness past the season’s end last fall. Most recently, the girls’ kindness was acknowledged by New Jersey Senator Cory Booker.

The team’s fundraising efforts are still in progress and the swing installation is planned for this spring. Through the girls’ caring and collaboration, soon all students at Littlebrook Elementary School will be able to enjoy recess time. You can learn more about the progress of the team’s fundraising and receive updates about the swing on their fundraising page here
