5 Ways to Beat the Heat and Conquer the Run

By Emma Davis on 08/01/2018 | Wellness Tips

It’s hot, humid and so bright outside that finding motivation to get outdoors seems to be in short supply. When it comes to running, these are not exactly the weather conditions that encourage you to take on an aerobic trek. So how does one stay motivated to run and beat the heat? There are a few ways to power through it!

First, it is important to approach running with a positive attitude. If you see running as a chore or a burden, it will seem impossible to make it a consistent routine.

There are a variety of ways to make running fun and motivational. Choose one of the methods below  to keep you ‘on track’ all summer long. Run with it!

Let the beat move your feet.

We all have favorite summer hits that take us to a happy place. Use these go-to jams to carry you through your run. Make an upbeat playlist of songs to access on your mobile device and listen to them as you run.

Running or exploring?

Use running as an opportunty to explore new places this summer. Try going to a local greenway or trail that you have never ventured to before. Enjoy running with new scenery and seeing what these places have to offer. You never know -- maybe you will find a new favorite route!

Have a buddy to give you a boost.

Running alone can be nice but it can also be rewarding to have a partner that will help you reach your goals. Before you plan your next run, reach out to a friend that enjoys staying active and pick a day that works for both of your schedules. Commit to making time on that day to go running together. Having a buddy will provide someone to hold you accountable and offer motivation.

Treat yourself.

After running on a hot day, there is nothing better than enjoying something ice-cold to replenish and refuel your body. Instead of taking your normal route, try running to a local frozen yogurt shop, coffee bar or smoothie cafe. Reward yourself for your hard work and dedication. Whether it’s a cold brew coffee or a frozen snack, keep your eyes on the prize and keep going.

Not conventional, but still beneficial.

You are not limited to the traditional run. Try a different activity, maybe something you’ve never done before, that is enjoyable and still allows you to get in some cardio. Not only will you have the opportunity to work different muscle groups, but you can also make some summer memories. You might enjoy:

  • A soccer game
  • A water balloon fight with family and friends
  • A bike ride
  • Hiking
  • Swimming
  • Beach volleyball
  • Ice skating
  • Jump rope
  • Indoor rock climbing
