National Coach Ambassador Spotlight: Meet Shannon!

By Asha Ellison on 07/03/2019 | 2019 National Coach Ambassadors

Meet Shannon! The joyful journalist from Texas loves to laugh and has an incredible sense of humor.

Name: Shannon Murray

Nickname: SJ

Occupation: Journalist

Location: Dallas

Age: 31

Who inspires you?

My friends! They are down-to-earth, generous and fun. They keep me grounded. They remind me of what’s important in life.

Where’s your favorite place in the world?

The Amalfi Coast in Italy is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. But my favorite place in the world has to be Austin, TX. There’s nowhere like home and that’s where I feel most like myself.

If you could be any animal, which would you be?

I would be a monkey because it seems like they have fun and they’re smart. Plus, I sort of think I look like one.

What’s the last book you read or who is your favorite musical artist/band/group?

I’m currently reading Barbara Walters' memoir. My favorite book is "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah. It’s an incredible story that I could read more than once!

My favorite band is Foo Fighters or Weezer.

What are you most passionate about?

Music. I’ve been obsessed with listening to music since I was really little. I play the piano and I love to sing even though I don’t have the best voice.

What’s your favorite movie?

Almost Famous

What’s your favorite way to give back to the community?

Being a Girls on the Run Coach! It has been one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences. It has given me the chance to be a mentor and to connect with the girls. We spend a lot of time with them each week and it’s an opportunity to truly make an impact. Plus, the girls make me laugh and I’ve learned a lot about myself and how to work with young people.

What show(s) are you currently watching?

Hate to admit it... but currently Real Housewives and Dirty John. My favorite shows, though, are Game of Thrones, Friends, The Office and Arrested Development

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

Being a GOTR ambassador! I’ve had a great experience as a coach and I’m excited to spread the word about this program and help it grow.

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

I’ve always loved Lady Gaga! She lives such an interesting life and I love to perform!

What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?

Citrus cream shrimp pasta in Italy, black paella in Spain or my mom’s Steak Diane and fettucini alfredo. She’s the best cook. Also, you can’t beat the Tex-Mex here in Texas! Queso is my favorite food. I can’t choose just one meal I love it all.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

We’re planning our next trip to South Africa.

What’s your hidden talent?

I can quote the movie Clueless. But, it’s not really hidden because I’ll tell anyone who will listen.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be?

Magenta. My favorite color is green but for some reason I feel like I would be magenta. I wear that color a lot! It’s bold and fun.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Buckeyes at Christmas (family recipe).

What is your quote to live by?

I have two favorites: “be better, not bitter” and “character is what you do when no one is watching.”
