GOTR Spirit & Giving Spirit

By Pamela Young on 12/15/2014 | General

Since our fall season of programming kicked off back in August, we’ve been celebrating Girls on the Run (GOTR) spirit at all of our councils from coast to coast. It is a spirit of positivity and joy that leads with an open heart and stands up for others. It’s a spirit of thoughtfulness that embraces differences and celebrates connectedness. It’s a spirit of confidence that ignites limitless potential!

And it’s also a spirit of giving… to ourselves, to others and to the world around us.

The girls put their giving spirit into action through community impact projects that each team decides and does together.

This is certainly true at the end of each season of programming when the girls put their giving spirit into action through community impact projects that each team decides and does together. In recent weeks, Girls on the Run teams have helped animal rescue organizations, donated goods to homeless shelters, sent care packages to service members and wounded veterans, posted encouraging notes around their schools and given their time and energy to many other worthwhile causes.

Although it’s one of the ways we conclude every program season, it’s particularly fitting when giving also features so prominently in many of the holidays that happen during this time of year.

So how will you use your GOTR spirit to express your giving spirit this holiday season? Will you give goods or supplies to a food bank or homeless shelter (see links below)? Will you gift your physical, spiritual or emotional health by taking care of a need you’ve been postponing? Will you perform some random acts of kindness before the new year?

We invite you to feed your giving spirit in whatever ways you find meaningful. Thank you for the gift you’ve given us by reading Remarkable!

Finding Places to Donate Items:

FeedAmerica can help you find a food bank near you.

The Homeless Shelter Directory will show you the shelters in your area that accept donations.

As the girls in our program learn, there are so many ways to give to your community! Use the comments section below (not available to mobile users) to share other ideas for giving back.

If you'd like to make a gift to Girls on the Run in honor or remembrance of someone special this holiday season, click here. Your gift will cover twice the ground... helping the girls in our program and also serving as a unique gift to the person or family in whose name you give.
