Performance Management and Compensation Planning

One of the most important responsibilities of the board is to conduct an annual performance review of the Council Director. These resources support individual goal setting and the evaluation process.

  • Individual Objectives and Assessment Template: Each staff member, especially the executive director, should create (with support from the Board Chair and/or Gov Committee) individual annual goals and objectives that measure success, track progress, identify areas of opportunities, and serves as an accountability and feedback tool. This template also serves as a mid-year and end-of-year assessment tool and aligns to our core values.

Compensation Planning

One of the Mission Advancement Markers is Competitive Council Director Compensation. Girls on the Run has prioritized paying council staff competitive wages for many years. While the council network has made significant progress, there is still work to be done to ensure that every council director is paid at or above the median income.

Council boards should start by reviewing the:

  1. Checklist for Establishing an Executive  Director Compensation Plan
  2. Candid Compensation Report Best Practices

Next, reach out to your regional director for support on referencing the National Candid Report found on the Council Portal which is based on your state and the size of the council budget. Council boards may also want to visit the *living wage data site.

Council boards should compensate their directors at or above the National Candid Report median for their state and budget size or the *local living wage, whichever is greater. Additionally, councils are encouraged to review local non-profit salary reports for supplemental data. (This will be especially important for councils in areas with a high cost of living.)

Every council should set an initial target to compensate its director above the living wage and then to set targets raise the director’s compensation at or above the median using the National Candid Report.
