Each year on the International Day of the Girl, we join communities across the globe in celebrating the power and potential of every girl.
The United Nations first declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl in 2011 to raise awareness of gender inequities, recognize girls’ rights, and acknowledge the unique challenges they face worldwide. In addition to discussing the issues at stake for girls globally, the International Day of the Girl highlights the possibilities that exist when we empower girls and address their needs. Just as our trained, caring coaches inspire participants to speak up boldly and embrace their uniqueness, this day is an opportunity to remind all the girls in our lives that their voices are vital, their perspectives are important, and their futures matter.
In celebration of International Day of the Girl, we asked Girls on the Run International staff to pause, reflect, and share the advice they would give their 10-year-old selves. Their words radiate wisdom, courage, and love, demonstrating how deeply the GOTRI team embodies its core values. As you read their reflections, we also encourage you to take a moment to nurture the GOTR participant within you with extra care, compassion, and kindness.
Happy International Day of the Girl!
Liz Kunz
Chief Executive Officer
“You are strong, sensitive, and smart. Next year, you will experience hormonal changes, and these, along with societal expectations, will be confusing to navigate. Know that your worth is not defined by having a boyfriend (and then a husband!) Instead, focus your energy on learning to love and honor who you are.”

Liz has been with GOTRI for 22 years.
Victoria Payne
Chief Financial Officer
“Start eating healthy and being active when you are a kid. Try the activities that you are curious about.”

Victoria has been with GOTRI for six months.
Allie Riley
Chief Program Officer
“You are about to face new places and big changes. Keep finding joy in movement, learning, and laughing with friends, and always hold on to what makes you, you. Seek out places where you feel you belong and remember that you are enough just as you are.”

Allie has been with GOTRI for 13 years.
Molly Ricks
Senior Graphic Designer
“No one ever tells you that bravery can feel like fear. So sometimes, the fear does not subside, and you must do it afraid. Do the scary thing, one step at a time!”

Molly has been with GOTRI for five years.
Kate Thieda
Director – Council Development, Central Region
“Go for it—even the big, scary stuff! You don’t have to know everything to start, and it’s okay if you mess up. That’s how you discover just how brave and amazing you really are.”

Kate has been with GOTRI for six months.
Caitlin Jacob
Digital Marketing Manager
“Don’t be afraid to speak up when you need help! You’re not going to master everything you try immediately (sometimes ever), and that’s okay! Focus on the things that bring you the most joy.”

Caitlin has been with GOTRI for two years.
Kelly McGuire
Communications & PR Manager
“The way you view the world and experience emotions is not something to be ashamed of. Embrace your unique perspective and continue nurturing your creativity, heart, and passion, even when it feels scary. Mentally bookmark the joyful moments of life in unmissable neon. During cloudy times, lean into this light—you deserve it.”

Kelly has been with GOTRI for four years.
Taunee Skye
HR Coordinator
“Trust that the things that make you different are the things that make you strong. The light of your curiosity will carry you towards the people and paths meant just for you.”

Taunee has been with GOTRI for eight months.
Kelsi Auker
Development Coordinator
“Always do what makes you happy, no matter what others around you may think. It is so important to move through life with joy without worrying about outside opinions. Have confidence in who YOU are!”
