For 30 years, Girls on the Run councils from coast to coast have relied on dedicated volunteers to bring the GOTR mission to life. Whether you have a few hours a month, a couple of afternoons each week, or just a single day to lend a hand, you can find a GOTR volunteer opportunity that fits your schedule and skills.
Here are a few ways to get involved with your local Girls on the Run council.
If you have 1 ½ hours twice a week for 8-10 weeks: Become a Coach
Coaches are the heart of our program! Each season, trained volunteer coaches lead a team through our evidence-based curriculum, guiding them through lessons that build confidence, strengthen relationships, and encourage healthy habits. Coaches meet with their team twice a week throughout the season and help prepare them for the end-of-season 5K Celebration.
No prior coaching or running experience is required! You just need a desire to support girls as they discover their strengths and reach their goals. We provide training, easy-to-follow lessons, and all the supplies you need.

Coaching roles include:
- Head Coach: Leads the team and facilitates lessons at each practice.
- Assistant Coach: Supports the head coach and helps guide activities and discussions.
- Junior Coach: High school girls ages 16-18 who want to grow their leadership skills. Paired with a mentor coach, junior coaches receive support to develop their own skills while serving as role models to program participants.

If you have 2-5 hours a month: Serve as a Site Liaison
Girls on the Run programs are hosted in schools and community spaces, and site liaisons help make those partnerships possible. Site liaisons secure safe, accessible locations for Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole teams and serve as the main point of contact between the site and the council throughout the season. This role requires just a few hours each month, but plays an important role in ensuring girls in your community have access to the program.

If you have 3-5 hours a month (plus occasional events): Join the Council Board
For volunteers who want to make a long-term impact, serving on a local council board is a powerful way to support our mission. Board members provide guidance and strategic oversight that helps councils thrive. Responsibilities may include strategic planning and mission advancement, financial stewardship and budgeting, volunteer and community engagement, and fundraising outreach.
Board service typically requires a few hours each month, plus occasional participation in events.
If you have 2-6 hours: Volunteer at an event
Not able to commit to a full season? Volunteering at an event is a great way to jump in and make a difference! Councils host events throughout the year, including the signature end-of-season 5K Celebrations, community fundraisers, and outreach activities.

Event volunteers might:
- Help with setup or breakdown
- Complete a 5K with a GOTR girl as a 5K Buddy
- Cheer on participants along the 5K course or hand out medals at the finish line
- Staff water stations or activity areas
- Assist with check-in or logistics
Even a few hours of your time can help make these events successful.
